Slingshot Techniques
There are two ways to shoot with Slingshot, shooting horizontally or aiming vertically. The latter being the easiest to learn and the most effective to use.
Both forms are detailed below:
Vertical Shooting
In vertical slingshot shooting, the slingshot is held so that the forks are aligned vertically, one on top of the other.
Vertical Technique
- Grip: Grasp the slingshot by the handle, making sure the forks are in an upright position. Your thumb and forefinger should wrap around the handle tightly.
- Projectile placement: Place the projectile in the slingshot bag, holding it with the index finger and thumb of the other hand.
- Tensioning: With the arm holding the leather with the projectile, pull back making sure to maintain the vertical alignment of the forks. The arm holding the slingshot should be extended or slightly bent.
- Aiming: When aiming, you align the projectile with the target using an imaginary line between your eyes, the rubber bands that should overlap each other and the target. The sight should be slightly above the projectile.
- Shooting: Release the bag with a quick but smooth action, allowing the projectile to shoot out towards the target.
Advantages of Vertical Shooting
- It allows better visibility of the target due to vertical alignment and generates more accuracy and more confidence in the shooter.
- It is more intuitive for beginners who tend to find it more natural to aim this way and the technique is very easy to apply. (It is generally the one I usually recommend).
Horizontal Shooting
In horizontal firing, the slingshot is held so that the forks are aligned horizontally, side by side.
Horizontal Shooting Technique
- Grip: Grasp the slingshot by the handle, making sure the forks are horizontal. Your thumb and forefinger should wrap around the handle tightly.
- Projectile placement: Place the projectile in the slingshot bag, holding it with the index finger and thumb of the other hand.
- Tensioning: With the arm holding the bag, pull backward while maintaining the horizontal alignment of the forks. The arm holding the sling can be extended or slightly bent, but it is important that it is parallel to the ground.
- Aiming: When aiming, you align the projectile with the target using an imaginary line between your eyes, the center of the forks and the target. The sight should be slightly above the projectile. Horizontal alignment can aid in stability.
- Shooting: Release the bag with a quick but smooth action, allowing the projectile to shoot out towards the target.
